Documents I need to get married

Documents you need to get married in Australia.

If you refer to the Notice of Intended Marriage form, you will see that there are documents that must be provided to an authorised celebrant prior to the marriage taking place.

The first document you must provide is the completed Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) form, along with the required identity documentation.

In order to identify the persons on the form, when lodging the NOIM each party must provide evidence of their date and place of birth. The authorised celebrant must be satisfied that each person is one of the people named in the Notice (NOIM).

Specific Documents to Show

This Identity documentation can be: a birth certificate, an official extract from a birth register, an Australian passport or an overseas passport, and Immi card, proof of age card, a keypass, a change of name certificate, and in some circumstances, such as that of a person with a refugee status – a Commonwealth statutory declaration may be provided if official evidence of the birthplace is not able to be presented. Refer to the celebrant for more information regarding your own personal situation.

If a party is divorced or a party’s last spouse died then evidence of divorce or death of that spouse must be provided.

If either party is in the process of getting divorced, they are still able to proceed with the NOIM lodgement and and they should choose the option ‘divorce pending’ and then provide the final divorce document when it becomes available at a later time. However they will not be able to get married until all original documentation is provided to the authorised celebrant.

All documentation is required to be in english and some documents may need to be translated to english. Refer to www.naati.com.au to access local professional translators who can assist you with that service in your specific language.

The section on the NOIM form (on page 4) which refers to the identity documentation will be filled in by the authorised celebrant prior to the wedding taking place.

If you are unsure of any of the ID and evidence requirements, just contact the office and one of the team will assist you with information that may be helpful in how you can obtain any documents you may be missing.

Our team is available on both phone and email to assist you.
