How to get your official marriage certificate after your legal marriage.

A Simple Guide for Newlyweds

As you begin your life together as a married couple, one important step is obtaining your official marriage certificate. This document serves as legal proof of your marriage and is often required for various purposes, from changing your name to applying for spousal benefits.

If you get married with the team at Marriage Victoria and just want a copy of the standard-issue marriage certificate, then you wont need to do anything other than let us know your preferred mailing address, and then pay the standard fee for the government’s final and official marriage certificate. This fee is paid to the eRegistry, and not to Marriage Victoria. Your celebrant will explain the simplest way to do this directly after the wedding.

How does this happen?

After your ceremony and legal signing of your marriage certificate paperwork, your celebrant will upload all legal documentation to the Registrar in the state where your wedding took place, via the Government’s online portal.

Your celebrant is then able to order your official marriage certificate for you immediately following the ceremony completion. It will be delivered via Express Post to your nominated postal address anywhere in Australia or Internationally. The Express Post mailing fees vary based on the destination.

All you have to do it make the payment for the certificate (which in Victoria is currently $64.40) for Australia-wide delivery, including the Express Post envelope.

What if I was married elsewhere?

If you were married anywhere in Australia and didn’t request for your celebrant to order your certificate for you, then here’s a simple guide to help you navigate the process of obtaining your official marriage certificate:

Married in Australia:

If you have already legally married anywhere in Australia, including marriage in a Registry, a religious place of worship or with a celebrant, then you can simply apply for your official Marriage Certificate online through the office of the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in your state or territory. A simple Google search should take you straight to their website. Follow the instructions online for your fastest and simplest way to obtain your certificate.

Submit Your Application:

Fill out the application form for a marriage certificate online. This form is typically available online or through the office of the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in your state or territory where you were married. Make sure to provide accurate information and follow any instructions provided.

Provide Supporting Documents:

Along with your application form, you will be required to submit certain supporting documents, such as proof of identity and details of your marriage. Check the specific requirements outlined by the issuing authority and ensure that you include all necessary documentation with your application. They will instruct you on how to upload or mail in the required paperwork.

Pay the Fee:

There is a standard fee associated with obtaining an official marriage certificate. The fee amount may vary depending on your location for delivery and the type of certificate requested.

Wait for Processing:

After submitting your application and payment, your request will be processed by the relevant authority. Processing times may vary, but you can typically expect to receive your official marriage certificate within a few weeks of submitting your application. Check online for current processing times.

Wait for Processing: 6 Receive Your Certificate and check for any errors:

Once your application has been processed and approved, you will receive your official marriage certificate via Express Post delivery. Verify that all the information on the official marriage certificate is correct. Don’t worry – if your notice any errors, it can easily be corrected if you notify the issuing authority in your state or territory, and follow the instructions available online for correction of any errors on a marriage certificate.
If you have any questions or need assistance throughout the process of applying for your official marriage certificate, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in your state or territory.
