Lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage

How do I Lodge the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) Form?

In Australia, the first part of the process for any couple to get legally married is to fill out and lodge the Notice Of Intended Marriage – Form 13 with an authorised marriage celebrant – who essentially represents the government in this process.

Many overseas couples often refer to the NOIM as a ‘marriage licence’, however in every state of Australia the NOIM document is lodged directly with the Celebrant, rather than the government.

There are three parts to the cost and process of getting married;
Number one – is the NOIM Lodgement fee of $175 which is non-refundable.
Number two – is the actual ceremony fee which includes the celebrant and all the legal process. This can be either at your chosen location or at our Award-Winning Melbourne Marriage Registry ceremony room.
Number three – after the ceremony is complete, you are able to order your official processed marriage certificate from the Government. Your celebrant is able to order this for you and would give you an invoice from the Government portal which you can pay directly to the Government’s eRegistry.

We’ll make the process simple and easy to understand for you.

Lodge your NOIM immediately today – call us for remote audio-visual link signing/witnessing*!

As at 12 June 2024, we can now provide all couples in Australia with the option to have their Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) witnessed remotely, via audio-visual link, as well as in person.

Whilst we can assist you to apply to the government for a shortening of notice time on the NOIM where applicable, you will need to meet certain strict guidelines to be eligible for this, and there would be additional fees payable directly to the Government in order to make that application. Contact our office for more details if you need a date which is less than the prescribed one month wait period after lodgement of the NOIM.

The Attorney General’s website states:

Section 42 of the Marriage Act 1961 (the Marriage Act) requires that a marriage shall not be solemnised unless a notice in writing of the intended marriage (this form) is given to the authorised celebrant solemnising the marriage.

You can book your Melbourne Marriage Registry ceremony to be legally conducted in the minimum of one month from the date of signing and lodging your Notice of Intended Marriage, or up to 18 months after the lodgement.
